Can You Freeze Pork Pies?
23 Jul, 2025
At Toppings Pies, we’re often asked: “Can you freeze pork pies?” The answer is a resounding yes, and with a few simple tips, you can enjoy our award-winning traditional and speciality pork pies whenever you like.
🥧 Why Freeze Pork Pies?
Our traditional pork pies are freshly baked and ready to eat, with a minimum shelf life of six days. That’s plenty of time to enjoy them fresh, but what if you want to stock up or save some for later? Freezing is the perfect way to keep that unbeatable taste and quality until you’re ready to tuck in.
Which Pies Are Suitable for Freezing?
Most of our range can be safely frozen:
- Traditional pork pies, in sizes from 120g right up to 3.5 kg, freeze very well.
- Speciality pork pies, such as Game & Poultry, Scrumpy, Chicken & Ham, and Apricot & Poultry, can also be frozen, either whole or in portions.
- Larger gala pies, including the Traditional Pork Gala and Pork & Egg Gala, cannot all be frozen if they contain egg. The Pork & Egg Gala pie is the one variety that must be enjoyed fresh rather than frozen.
Freezing Tips
Freeze promptly – For best results, place your pie in the freezer as soon as possible after purchase.
Consider portion sizes – Whether you’re freezing a whole pie or half, wrap it well in cling film or foil, then place it in an airtight freezer bag to keep out air and prevent freezer burn.
Label and date – Write the date clearly on the packaging and freeze pies for up to three months to maintain their best quality.
Defrost gently – Move your pie from the freezer to the fridge and leave it to thaw overnight. Slow defrosting helps preserve the texture and flavour.
Why Freezing Works So Well
Our pies are crafted with hot water crust pastry, which is sturdy enough to handle freezing. The pastry’s density helps protect both the meat and the jelly inside, keeping your pie in great condition until you’re ready to enjoy it. Many of our larger pies are vacuum-packed, giving them an extended shelf life of at least eight days and protecting them from freezer air if frozen.
Perfect Pies for Freezing
- Traditional Family (430g), Medium Cutting (920g), Large Cutting (2.2kg) — perfect for any gathering and freeze brilliantly.
- Speciality flavours like Game & Poultry, Scrumpy, Chicken & Ham — these indulgent pies freeze just as successfully as our traditional range.
When Not to Freeze
We recommend avoiding freezing:
- Apricot-topped pies, as the fruit topping can become watery after thawing.
- Pork & Egg Gala pies, since the egg filling doesn’t freeze well and can affect both taste and texture.
For buffets, parties or special occasions, we suggest serving these varieties fresh instead. If you have leftovers, why not share them with family and friends?
